Big's Backyard Ultra

My completely mental (in a good way) mate @drvertigo competed in Big's Backyard last year. The HK legend @aublumberg (another bonkers, but in a inspires-me-to-push-my-boundaries way) asked me to draw a special something to commemorate his legendary effort that put hk runners firmly on the world trail running map.

Big’s is a unique race where runners have to put themselves on the line every hour to complete a 7k loop until the last person is standing/still ready to run/crawl/compete. 2019 saw the first ever female winner, Maggie Guterl @maggatronruns, take it home with 59... yes 59 loops (400k+) Will was right there with her gritting it out to the last, until he finally succumbed to exhaustion falling asleep on the course. What a pair of badasses.
I often get asked why I run crazy distances (chomp change compared to these), and its these people who inspire me to constantly push my limits and test what I'm made of, whilst truly feeling at home in nature.

About to crew Will on his 2nd go at @hk4tuc this weekend (again, mental).... a mere 300k run across HK!

One of my favourite parts was doing the portrait of the notorious Lazurus Lake, real name Gary Cantrell, best known as the creator of Barkley Marathons, the insanely difficult 100-miler that barely anyone has completed. (No females to date, will 2020 be the year?), and also Big's Backyard Ultra (see my previous post). Not afraid to put his money where his mouth is, in 2018 he crossed 5100km on foot from Rhode island to Oregan.
Big's ultra is named after his dog, Big.
